2019 Associated Masonry Contractors of Houston Golden Trowel Honor Award

Project: United Airlines Terminal B

>>> The United Airlines Terminal B project was designed to elevate the passenger experience and establish a new benchmark for U.S. airline terminal facilities. The work included the renovation of three existing gates and the addition of a new concourse featuring eleven gates.

Camarata Masonry Systems, Ltd. (CMS) was responsible for the supply and installation of the following materials on this project: 368 (10x8x16) Regular Grey CMU, 1,632 (6x8x16) Regular Grey CMU, 26,244 (4x8x16) Ground Face White Limestone CMU, 27,216 (4x8x16) Regular Grey CMU, and 112,140 (8x8x16) Regular Grey CMU.

Because the work was being performed at an operational airport, security was the first priority. Coordination with the Transportation Security Administration, Customs and Border Protection and the Houston Airport System (HAS) helped create processes and procedures to allow workers to move freely through the project site and for delivery of materials.

One of the unique situations on this jobsite was that extra precaution was required to control all debris from blowing into the runways. This was specifically addressed as a major concern due to potential damage to airplane engines.

Due to a change in the plans after work began, we were instructed not to install the last two courses of 4" ground face CMU white limestone on the first level of the concourse so that the fire rated insulation board and sofitt gypsum board could be installed. After all the insulation and gypsum board joints had been taped and inspected, we were then able to re-mobilize and install the last courses of 4" ground face CMU.

The installation was completed on time, in a safe environment and within budget in various phases under tight constraints with superb craftsmanship.
